Lyman High School Band

S Muirhead

Mr. David (Scott) Muirhead, Director

Hello, I'm Scott Muirhead. I'm a 1983 music eduation honors graduate of South Dakota State University. While at State, I participated in THE PRIDE (marching band), BIG BLUE BRASS (basketball pep band), concert and symphonic bands, jazz and brass ensembles, and orchestra. I performed in Cavorts, Capers, and in the pit band for Grease (in which my younger sister, Crystal, starred as "Rizzo").

I was a K-12 music instructor at Harding County Schools (Buffalo, SD) for six years (from 1983-1989). After completing my master's degree in secondary school administration, I returned to Harding County Schools for the next two years (1990-1992) in the dual role of principal/music director.

I joined the Lyman School staff in 1992. This is my 24th year serving the district and its students as a 5-12 director of instrumental music.

J. Muirhead

Mrs. Julie Muirhead, Assistant Director

Hello. I'm Julie Muirhead and I am assistant director of bands at Lyman. I received my bachelor's degree in music at SDSU in piano and oboe. I accompany the students for contest; I accompany the choirs for concerts and contest. I help prepare students for contest and all-state. I assist in the planning of trips. Scott and I believe that "all God's children got a place in the band" if they so desire. We work hard to maintain students' interest and produce a high quality product.

High school band state tournament performances and out-of-state festivals

The Lyman High School Raiders band has a proud history of state and regional performances.  Attached is a chronology of Lyman Band's travels to state tournaments and out-of-state concert band competitions.

South Dakota High School Activities Association All-State Band

South Dakota High School Activities Association All-State Band is the highest state honor awarded to a high school bandsman.  Though, by no means a large school, Lyman can boast of its participation in South Dakota High School All-State Band.  Attached is a list of Lyman High School students who successfully auditioned for all-state band.  This year, Lyman's lone auditionee was Tyler Lebeda  We will be notified of his results on Tuesday, February 2, 2016.

John Phillip Sousa Award

The John Phillip Sousa Award is a nationally recognized honor presented to a high school's outstanding senior bandsman.  It has been the history of Lyman High School that the high school band students vote on this award.  Attached are the recipients through the years.

Middle School All-State Band

The first South Dakota Music Educators' Association (SDMEA) Middle School All-State Band took place in March 2000.  Lyman's first student to audition was Ashley Willcuts in 2003.  Congratulations to this year's members.  Raena Borah, Bryson Muirhead, and Sarah Urban will represent Lyman Middle School at the 17th annual SDMEA All-State Band which is to take place in Pierre, SD on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 4:00 PM CST.

Lyman Contest Performances

Under construction!  In part, because of an assignment for South Dakota Bandmasters, but also out of interest, I'm trying to outline the history of the Lyman Band program.  I've scoured the school annuals for information, but due to missing annuals from the library, I may be somewhat inaccurate.  If you have information on the Lyman Band program from years: 1972, 1977, 1981, 1986,1987, 1988, 1989, please forward to me?  Additionally, I'm interested in the Vivian, Reliance, Presho, and Kennebec band programs in the years prior to the consolidation.  Specifically, I'm looking for information concerning former band directors, contest ratings, band honors, etc.  Again, please forward your information to me? Thanks!

Lyman Band Directors

I've pretty well fleshed this out.  However, I'm still trying to find a 1977 annual so as to ascertain the band director during the 1976-77 school year. If you have any information (or would scan me copies of the band pages from the 1977 Raider) you can e-mail me at: david.muirhead@k12.sd.us Additionally, I'm looking for information on the pre-consolidation band programs from Kennebec, Presho, Reliance, and Vivian.  Thanks!
